Supt André Kotze inspects suspected counterfeit DVD's

A joint operation between the Polokwane police, Polokwane Municipality and Community Policing Forum paid dividends over the weekend with an array of successes.

Hot-spot areas in the central business district and downtown were targeted with members checking on hawkers’ licences and keeping a look-out for known suspects.

Illegal immigrants
At one “hair salon” in Paul Kruger Street, two allegedly illegal immigrants, one only 16 years old, were found. At the same shop, counterfeit DVDs were found. An illegal electricity connection was supplying electricity and sales were being done without a permit on the sidewalk. On further investigation, the police also discovered pamphlets advertising the services of an illegal abortionist. A locked door was discovered and after the door was forced open, the room was found to be similarly equipped to other illegal abortion rooms found elsewhere in the city recently.
Polokwane police station spokesperson, Insp Lesiba Ramoshaba said ther successes of the operation include 23 arrests for crimes including reckless and negligent driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, public drinking, common assault and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Fines
Members also visited shebeens in the area as well as some Polokwane nightclubs. In some instances, at shebeens, liquor was confiscated and some shebeens were found to be operating outside of their licence requirements.
Ramoshaba said fines totaling the amount of R26 000 were issued.

“We will continue to have crime prevention operations until this city is free from crime,” Ramoshaba concluded.
