New criminals, new crime habits
The past week saw some interesting tendencies in crime in Polokwane.
During the week Faranani Estates in Bendor (see map) suffered break-ins on two consecutive nights. It appears that the burglars were mainly after clothes, jewellery, knives and possibly firearms.
We heard people talking about the possibility that it could be Zimbabweans who were after clothing and easily sold jewellery. The burglars were apparently not interested in Tv's and other electronic goods.
Zimbabwean refugees and street children has become a problem which is excacerbated by people giving them money on street corners. Two of the problem areas are the entrance to Savannah Mall on the Tzaneen road (R71) and the corner of Munnik Ave (Modjadjiskloof Road) and Gemini Street into Sterpark.
Does your security complex have working electric fencing?
Many people in Polokwane live in peace, secure in the knowledge that they are safe behind electric fencing.
However, a number of complexes have turned off the electric supply due to the cost of the electricity, the fence has fallen into disrepair or the electric supply is inadequate for the size of the fence. In some complexes, their is no adequate follow-up process for when the fence is jeopardised or an accompanying alarm goes off.
Make sure that the fence which you depend on to keep you safe, is in fact alive and doing what it should be doing.
We suggest that you ask to see that the system is alive and working well as some complex administrators will assure you that their complex's fences are working when in fact it is not the case.
