Dr Petro Smit introduces Hospice Tzaneen which serves the communities of Haenertsburg, Tzaneen, Modjadjiskloof and Letsitele.

Hospice provides palliative care for people who suffer from life-threatening illnesses to enhance their quality of life and ensure a dignified last phase of life.

The hospice relies exclusively on donations. This hospice serves as the In Patient Unit (IPU) but care is preferably home-based.

Palliative care aims to enhance the quality of life of patients facing life-threatening illnesses.

How?
The prevention and relief of suffering
The identification, assessment and treatment of pain and other symptoms
Affirms life and regards dying as a natural process
Intends neither to hasten nor postpone death
Integrates the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care
Family support
Enhance the quality of life

Patient referrals
Referrals are received from medical doctors and specialists, patient contact with Hospice and family contact with Hospice.

An interdisciplinary team works together to enhance the quality of life of the patient and the family. The team consists of
a professional palliative care nurse
the patient's doctor, specialist and pharmacist
physiotherapist and dietician
patient's spiritual leader
psychologist or counsellor

The hospice IPU is a 2-bed facility (see the video)

Reasons why patients are admitted to the IPU includes
pain and symptom control
respite
terminal care
