The International Day for people with Disabilities was commemmorated at Centenary House in Polokwane on 3 December.

A number of local businesses participated in the successful day and organiser Johnny Graham expressed his satisfaction with the success of the day.

Able-bodied participants found themselves in wheelchairs, blindfolded, talking in sign language and had to participate in a bed race.

Companies that participated and were sponsors were Absa Polokwane with two teams, Vodacom Limpopo, Granor Passi in Polokwane, Sure Kudu Travel in Polokwane, Meropa and Chubb. Centenary House also entered a team.

The winners of the day were Absa 1 who promised to be back next year to defend their title.

NicP BOBBY VAN JAARSVELD SING IN POLOKWANE · read more »

Kaartjies is beskikbar teen R100.00 (Bespreek) en R80.00 (Onbespreek).kaartjies kan bekom word by Eve Steven 015 291 1787/8 of 079 624 2339 of by Lavender Blue – Savannah Mall.

Serebrale Verlamming

ONKUNDE oor Serebrale Verlamming

Solution to Access problems for persons with disability

Solution to Access problems for persons with disability

The way in which the environment is developed and organized contributes; to a large extend, to the level on independence and equality that people with disabilities enjoy.

There are a number of barriers in the environment which prevent disabled people from enjoying equal opportunities with non-disabled people.  For example: structural barriers in the built environment; inaccessible service points; inaccessible entrances due to security systems; poor town planning; and poor interior design.

The purpose of Section S of the National Building Regulations, and its associated Code 0400 includes regulations setting out national requirements for an accessible built environment.  Although this was an important development in the equalization of opportunities for persons with disabilities, these regulations have been extremely badly implemented/monitored and costs are often cited as the reason for the failure to provide a barrier free environment.

This will no longer be taken as an excuse in Polokwane where specifically the following are problem areas:

-          Access to public buildings.

-          Bad maintenance of sidewalks.

-          Curb ramps/cuts

-          Accessible parking

Due to the lack of access in Polokwane the Association for Persons with Disability, (APD) Limpopo formed an Access Committee to look into cases where people with disability has been discriminated against due to a lack of accessibility.  Members of the community are invited to send their complaints to APD for investigation and/or action.  Complaints can be sent to Christa van der Walt, fax 015 295 4990, apdnprov@mweb.co.za or PO Box 601, Polokwane, 0700 or contact us on 015 291 1787/8

“gestremdheid/disability” distansieer. So, asof gestremdheid ‘n vloekwoord is.

Wheelchairs for the children

Game Vodacom Wheelchair Drive

The lives of 400 children with physical disability across South Africa will change in October 2010 when they receive brand new wheelchairs with a total value of R1, 1 million from Game Stores and Vodacom. 32 of these wheelchairs were allocated to the Limpopo Province and were handed over to the children at a ceremony on Thursday, 21 October 2010 at the Offices of APD, Limpopo Province.

More than 4200 wheelchairs worth R8.4 million have already been donated to disabled schoolchildren as part of the Game and Vodacom wheelchair drive in the past 11 years. The funds are derived from the donation of an equal percentage of the profit on every Vodacom cellphone contract sold and every prepaid activation at all Game stores. This brings the total investment of this CSI project to R9, 5 million.

The National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa is also a partner in this ongoing initiative. Their role is to identify children with the greatest need for a wheelchair through the assistance of their provincial offices around the country, giving priority to disadvantaged schoolchildren.

“It is a constant challenge to provide support for people with disability throughout the country with the limited resources available to us, particularly during an economic downturn,’ said Johan Viljoen (National Director of the NCPPDSA.) ‘These annual donations are an enormous boost to our organisation and, for each individual child who receives their own new wheelchair, it is a wonderful gift.’

“To a child with physical disability, access to independent mobility not only takes the burden off the family or care-giver, but also gives new hope and confidence to the child. A wheelchair gives a child the means to attend school and the mobility to enjoy a whole range of new experiences,” said Viljoen.

We are thrilled that we have been able to offer this life-changing experience to so many youngsters for the 12th year running,’ said Jan Potgieter, Managing Director of Game. ’We empathise at how difficult it is for those who are unable to walk to attend school without a wheelchair and it is heart-warming to know that hundreds more schoolchildren are now equipped to obtain the same benefits from their education as their non-disabled classmates.’

Mthobi Tyamzashe, Chairman of the Vodacom Foundation, says: “Vodacom is delighted to once again be joining hands with Game in the handing over of the much-needed wheelchairs. Through this annual hand-over, we hope to help enable more recipients to enjoy unhindered mobility as they go about their normal day-to-day business.”

The SABS-approved wheelchairs are custom-made to suit the needs of each child with special needs from the specifications provided by their therapists. This means they provide more support for the child than a standard wheelchair, giving them greater freedom of movement and helping prevent further deterioration in their posture. All are folding models and some have special features like elevating leg rests, adjustable back and arm rests, wide front castors and tray straps.

The conditions in which the children live are also taken into account by the manufacturers. This is particularly important in rural areas where the terrain is uneven.

For more information about this project and other services to persons with disability please contact the Association for persons with disability, (APD) Limpopo Province.

SKISOFRENIE

                   Katatoniese skisofrenie : waar die betrokkene ’n sekere liggaamshouding inneem, amper soos ’n wasbeeld bly staan én rigied in daardie posisie bly.

DISABLED NOT ACCESSING GRANTS

The following extract appeared in Media24:”Many disabled South Africans are living in poverty without access to the government’s disability grant, a University of Johannesburg study has found.  Contrary to popular beliefs that disabled live on social grants, the study found that 61% of the respondents interviewed in eight of the poorest wards in Johannesburg are not accessing the disability grant,” said Lauren Graham.

Despite numerous initiatives by the Department of Social Development and the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) over many years, it seems as if many persons with disabilities still do not know the procedure to apply for a Disability Grant.

Article 28 [Adequate standard of living and social protection] of the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), of which SA is a signatory, includes that “States Parties recognize the right of persons with disabilities to social protection and to the enjoyment of that right without discrimination on the basis of disability, and shall take appropriate steps to safeguard and promote the realization of this right.” Government departments are thus obligated to assist persons with disabilities to live a life of dignity and respect.  This is supported by the South African Constitution.

Persons with disabilities can go to any office of SASSA throughout the country and apply for a grant.  Certain procedures need to be followed and will be explained to individuals.  If people do not have ID documents, the department of Home Affairs needs to be approached to obtain the necessary documentation.

For Further inquiries and/or assistance contact Mrs. Trix Nortman, Social Development Manager at the Association for Persons with Disability (APD), Limpopo Province at 015 291 1787/8.

If at any time, a person with a disability is treated poorly by any official, such person has the right to approach the ministry of Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities to report such matters.  It must further be noted that terminology such as “the Disabled” is not acceptable and that the term “Persons with Disabilities” consistently be used.

Does Your Child Have A Social Learning Disability?

Most parents know that the prevalence of learning disabilities is skyrocketing. Including other neurodevelopmental syndromes like ADHD, autism, and Asperger's syndrome, learning disabilities have unfortunately become commonplace in the lives of our children, and by extension, our families.

When most of us think of learning, we naturally think of the kinds of learning that occurs in school. The most widely discussed learning disability is dyslexia - and justifiably so.  Reading is the foundation for many other types of life learning, and most of could agree that reading skills are essential.  Hopefully, other kinds of learning challenges, equally important to a successful life, will soon gain greater recognition and intervention.

Specifically, let's look at social learning problems, which include the realism of nonverbal learning disorders. Social learning plays a critical role in helping children manage fundamental milestones such as forming friendships, making a positive impression on others and learning to read nonverbal communication - "body language." Because these learning skills may not directly affect academic performance they are often seen as less "urgent" than dyslexia or a math disability - but don't believe it.

Social learning is every bit as important to healthy development as learning to read or do fractions. In the book, Boys of Few Words, is new research is discussed which identifies an important link between dyslexia and social learning skills.

It turns out that phonological awareness - the ability to hear and discriminate word sounds - is a common problem among socially challenged kids. In addition, can you imagine how much less social knowledge you might have if you weren't a reader?

Helping social learning problems can be complex because their effects are often pervasive. Children with social learning problems need assistance at home and school. Families that are most successful in helping a child overcome social learning problems collaborate carefully with schools. It is very powerful for a child to see that significant adults in her or his life are "on the same page." If your child is the beneficiary of an  Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), make sure that social learning challenges are addressed within the plan.

Five leading indicators of a social learning problem:
1. Limited Friendships
2. Excessive Self-Consciousness

3. Frequently Missed Social Cues
4. Difficulty Sustaining Conversation
5. Complaints that "Nobody Likes Me"

If you have concerns about your own child's social development, or are wondering if he or she has a non-verbal learning disability, please don't wait to seek assistance. Children with social learning problems are more likely to feel isolated, bully or be bullied, and suffer from low self-esteem. Talk to your child's school psychologist or guidance counselor, or get a referral to a clinical psychologist who works with children to get a thorough evaluation. A social skills group may be particularly helpful to give your child a safe place practice social interaction in a supportive atmosphere. To find one, check with local psychologists, community and religious organizations, or your child's school. A good social skills group will have a skilled mediator, clearly established goals, and provide social learning in a fun and interactive way.

Do you park in disabled parking bays?

Accessible parking for Persons with Disability

It has once again come to the Association of Persons with Disability (APD) in Limpopo that non-disabled persons, (including disabled persons without permits) are parking their vehicles in parking bays reserved for persons with disability that hold valid permits to do so.

Each time that a non-disabled person parks in a parking bay reserved for persons with disability, a barrier is created that prevents that person from freely participating in commerce; and the question may be asked if that non-disabled person would like to have a disability of which the full consequences is often beyond the mobility impairment.

All that people with disability insist on is a barrier free society, based on equal opportunity in which people with disability will live their lives to the fullest.

Are you aware that –
proper parking bays reserved for persons with disability are wider than normal parking bays. This is to accommodate a person to the transfer from the motor vehicle to a wheelchair.
parking for persons with disability is provided near to the entrances of a building to minimise fatigue to persons with severe mobility impairment.
parking permits can be obtained if the person is temporally disabled. These permits will be valid for a limited period only.
persons with disability pays a fee to obtain or to renew their parking permits.

We therefore urge non-disabled persons to refrain from using parking bays for persons with disability. Similarly we urge all persons with disability (including those persons who is temporally disabled) to obtain the necessary permit that entitles them to park in parking bays for persons with disability.

Please show your support to persons with disability by reporting unauthorized users of disabled parking bays by contacting APD with their vehicle registration numbers to enable us to make them aware of the purpose of accessible parking bays.

For more information on how to obtain parking permits, contact Ms Trix Nortman or Christa van der Walt from APD, Limpopo Province at 015 291-1787 or email
